A SOCIAL media influencer has been detained to assist an investigation after a three-year-old girl was found to have cannabis in her system, prompting scrutiny of her time at a babysitter’s residence.

Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the 39-year-old man, who is the babysitter’s son, was initially remanded for seven days from 16 April and will be held for a further five days from tomorrow until Monday, 27 April, to facilitate inquiries.

"On 14 April, at about 5pm, a medical officer at Melaka Hospital received the victim in a semi-conscious condition and found that the victim’s urine screening test result was positive for tetrahydrocannabinol.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive chemical compound found in cannabis (marijuana).

"The victim’s mother informed the medical officer that the child had been picked up from the babysitter’s home in Sungai Putat and that on 11 April the victim had been given breathing assistance via a tube in the red zone of the Emergency and Trauma Department at Melaka Hospital," he said in a statement issued today.

Following the incident, a team from the D11 division of the Criminal Investigation Department at the Melaka police contingent headquarters arrested the suspect at about 9.30pm on 15 April to assist further investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

Dzulkhairi said checks showed the suspect has no prior criminal record and that his urine test was negative, while the child has since recovered and has been discharged to return home. - April 23, 2026
