KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today recorded 1,704 new cases of Covid-19 and 11 deaths, health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham said.
The new infections bring the cumulative number of cases to 119,077 cases and the death toll to 494.
However, the recoveries recorded today far exceeded new infections at 2,726, bringing the total of those discharged to 92,218.
In a statement issued today, Noor Hisham said five of the cases today were imported.
Of the 21,365 active cases, 124 are under intensive care while 51 require ventilators.
Selangor recorded the highest number with 673 new infections or 39.5% of new cases among states and territories. Of these, 509 were from existing clusters and close-contact tracing.
Selangor was followed by Sabah with 316 cases and Johor with 179.
Kuala Lumpur registered 112 cases, followed by Penang (103), Perak (75), Kedah (53), and Kelantan (47).
Pahang saw 21 cases, followed by Putrajaya (17), Labuan (16), Sarawak (10), Melaka (six), and Terengganu (four).
Perlis is the only state to have no reported new cases today.
The ministry said 74 cases detected today were related to clusters involving lockups, immigration detention centres and prisons. It said 56 came from the Jalan Harapan cluster, followed by the Seberang Perai Prison (seven cases), Tembok Choh (five), Tembok Gajah (three), Tembok (two), and Kolam Air (one) clusters.
Six of the deaths today involved four men and two women in Selangor who were all aged between 56 and 69. Two of these occurred in Sabah, involving a 72-year-old woman and a 58-year old man who was a non-citizen.
Johor saw two deaths involving a 68-year-old man and another man aged 53, while Kedah saw a single death of a 71-year-old woman.
Most cases had prior health complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, among others.
Noor Hisham said that up to January 3, a total of 532 clusters have been recorded, including nine new ones today. Thus far, 300 clusters have ended, including six today consisting of the Sungai Cincin, Tempasuk, Jalan Tuaran, Gangsa, Plaza, and Teluk clusters.
He added that 59 clusters recorded additional cases, with the highest being the Kebun Baru cluster (89 cases), Beringin (82), Jalan Harapan Prison (56), and Sg Putus (56).
The nine new clusters recorded today include the Lintas Seraya cluster involving the Kota Kinabalu and Penampang districts in Sabah with 16 cases, and the Perdana Avenue cluster, a workplace cluster in Petaling district, Selangor with 202 positive cases.
The Osmo Jaya new cluster in Hulu Langat, Selangor registered 46 cases, while the Belati cluster covering Johor Baru, Kota Tinggi, Kulai, and Pontian saw 44 cases.
The Wawasan Gading cluster in Batu Pahat recorded 13 cases, while the Rengit Sentral cluster covering Kota Tinggi, Kluang and Johor Baru had 10 cases detected.
The Manik cluster in Kuala Krai (Kelantan) and Dungun (Terengganu) saw 22 cases, while the Paloh Tumpat cluster in Tumpat, Kelantan recorded 15 cases.
Finally, the Stutong cluster involving the Kuching district in Sarawak had five cases detected today. – The Vibes, January 3, 2021
