THE relationship between political parties that form the Unity Government coalition in Penang remains status quo so far, with existing cooperation running smoothly.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said, despite political developments at the national level, including tensions between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), the situation at the state level is still under control.
He said, Penang is still in stable with all parties in the state government working well together so far.
However, he admitted that the current political situation is always changing and all parties need to be aware of these developments.
“Penang remains status quo at the moment. However, we are always sensitive to environmental changes. So, it is still too early to draw any conclusions because so far, this cooperation is going well.
“The Penang State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session will also take place as scheduled, which is on May 8,” he said when met after officiating the Penang Autoshow 2026, today.
Chow said this when asked about the current political situation in Penang following political tensions at the national level, especially in Negeri Sembilan involving the relationship between Umno and PH.
In Penang, only one State Assemblyman (ADUN) from Umno and BN was appointed to the state government administration, namely Datuk Rashidi Zinol, who holds the state Rural Development, Agrotechnology, Food Security and Entrepreneurship portfolio.
Chow said that, in the current political landscape, each party needs to evaluate its relationship with its respective coalition partners, but such cooperation is not necessarily uniform in all states.
“In the Malaysian political scenario, each state may have their own political alignment based on local suitability and needs.
“What is important is to form a stable coalition and have a development agenda and direction that are in line with the interests of the people,” he said. – April 30, 2026
