FIVE vehicles parked at a flat along Jalan Perak were engulfed in a fire in the early hours of Sunday, causing significant damage to several cars and part of a garage structure.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director John Sagun Francis said the department received an emergency call at 4.30am, prompting firefighters from Fire and Rescue Department station at Jalan Perak to be deployed immediately to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the fire was found to involve five vehicles in the ground-floor parking area of the flat, also affecting part of the garage with an estimated 50 per cent destruction,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

He added that no casualties were reported in the incident. Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control at 4.38am before fully extinguishing the fire at 5.09am.

The vehicles involved were identified as a Nissan Grand Livina, Mitsubishi Xpander, Perodua Myvi, Toyota Hiace van and a Proton Prevé, with damage levels ranging between five and 80 per cent.

Authorities said the cause of the fire and the total losses are still under investigation by the fire department’s forensic unit. - May 3, 2026
