Anwar to lead Malaysian delegation to 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will lead the Malaysian delegation to the 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings, which begin tomorrow and run until 8 May.

In a statement, Wisma Putra said the summit will serve as a key platform for Malaysia to exchange views on ASEAN Community-building efforts and the future direction of the regional bloc.

“Discussions will also focus on the impact of the crisis in West Asia on the Southeast Asian region, as well as ASEAN’s response in ensuring regional energy security and food supply security, in addition to safeguarding the safety of ASEAN citizens in affected areas.

“The Prime Minister’s participation also reflects Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ASEAN centrality, unity and the region’s resilience in an increasingly complex global environment,” it said.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Utama Mohamad Hasan, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Indera Mohd Shahar Abdullah, as well as senior government officials.

In addition to the main ASEAN Summit, Anwar is also scheduled to attend the Special Summit of the Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), which will be held on the sidelines of the main proceedings.

While in Cebu, the Prime Minister is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from ASEAN member states.

The 48th ASEAN Summit will be preceded by a series of ministerial-level meetings, including the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the 31st ASEAN Political-Security Community Council Meeting, the 38th ASEAN Coordinating Council Meeting, as well as joint meetings involving ASEAN foreign and economic ministers. - May 6, 2026
