THE Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, today reiterated his stance that he does not approve of any pig farming activities being carried out in any district in Selangor.
This decision was finalised after taking into account the implications of pig farming, which can cause pollution to the soil, air and also river water sources through the release of pig faeces and sewage.
His Majesty also expressed concern that the activity could affect water catchment areas and rivers, which are sources of clean water supply for the population of approximately 9 million people in Selangor, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
"In addition, modern farming methods that comply with standards require very high costs and are impractical and cannot be implemented just to meet the supply of pork in Selangor.
"Therefore, His Majesty suggested that pork be imported from other states, such as Sarawak, to meet the needs of the non-Muslim community who consume pork in Selangor," read a statement shared by the Selangor Royal Office.
The Sultan’s private secretary, Datuk Munir Bani, said even countries like Singapore do not raise pigs and import pork from abroad.
The Sultan also believes that large-scale or small-scale pig farming is not suitable for implementation in Selangor, given the limited land resources and high property values, which should be utilised for more economic development purposes and benefit the community as a whole.
In this regard, the Sultan stressed that the issue of pig farming should be stopped completely (full stop) to avoid community unrest and ensure that the peace and harmony of the people in Selangor continues to be maintained," added Munir. – May 7, 2026
