PARTI Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) is preparing to hold a crucial leadership meeting in the coming days to deliberate on the future of its political relationship with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia amid escalating strains within the Perikatan Nasional opposition alliance.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the party leadership would meet within one or two days, likely before the Aidiladha celebrations, to discuss several issues involving coalition partners that had recently triggered dissatisfaction within PAS.
“We will hold a meeting in the near future and then make a decision. It will be done within one or two days, before Aidiladha.
“Whether the meeting is with us first (PAS), then Bersatu, we will see. It may be a meeting with PAS first,” he told reporters during the 58th anniversary convention of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia.
Also present at the event were Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai and Gerakan secretary-general Wong Chia Zen.
The latest development follows remarks by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who recently said the party would reassess its cooperation with Bersatu after accusing the party led by Muhyiddin Yassin of violating the spirit of solidarity among Perikatan Nasional component parties.
Hadi said the decision stemmed from a series of actions by Bersatu that PAS considered increasingly troubling and inconsistent with coalition cooperation.
Among the issues highlighted was Bersatu’s dismissal of several Kedah state executive councillors as well as Kelantan Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohamed Farid Mohamed Zawawi from within Bersatu’s own ranks, a move that reportedly intensified unease within PAS leadership circles.
Despite growing public speculation over tensions within the opposition coalition, Takiyuddin insisted PAS remained committed to maintaining discipline and order within the party while leadership deliberations continued.
Responding to criticism over PAS directives restricting members from publicly commenting on developments involving the party and its allies, he said the move was not intended to suppress freedom of expression.
“There is freedom, but there is a proper way. If everyone speaks openly, the situation will become even more chaotic. We need to have vision and allow the leadership to decide,” he said.
The emerging dispute has fuelled fresh questions over the stability and cohesion of Perikatan Nasional ahead of the next general election, particularly as political manoeuvring intensifies between PAS and Bersatu across several states under opposition control.
