A WOMAN was killed while seven others sustained injuries after a four-wheel drive vehicle carrying eight people veered off the road and plunged into a ravine in Keningau on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred along Jalan Bingkor near Chanang Hill when the vehicle reportedly lost control before tumbling approximately 10 metres down a steep embankment.

The impact caused the vehicle to overturn, throwing one female occupant from the vehicle while trapping another inside the wreckage.

Most of the occupants, including several children, managed to escape the damaged vehicle on their own despite suffering injuries.

The Star cited Keningau Fire and Rescue Station chief Severinus @ Mohd Nidzam Sainkui saying emergency responders received a distress call at 9.54am and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the scene, located about 12 kilometres from the station.

Firefighters arrived at approximately 10.05am and began rescue operations to assist the victims.

"We had to rescue a woman who was pinned in her seat, while the others had made their way out," he said in a statement.

Rescuers worked to extricate the trapped victim while medical personnel assessed the condition of the remaining occupants.

The woman who was thrown from the vehicle during the crash suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.

Severinus said the deceased was subsequently handed over to police for further action, while the seven injured victims were transported to hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims or the circumstances that caused the vehicle to lose control.

The rescue operation concluded at 11.51am after emergency crews secured the area and removed all potential hazards from the scene.

Police are expected to investigate the cause of the accident. - June 2, 2026
