A ROUTINE fishing trip off the Johor coast took a grim turn when a local fisherman recovered a human skull from the sea after it became entangled in his net, prompting a police investigation into the identity of the deceased.
The skull was discovered in waters off Sedili on June 6 by a 44-year-old boat skipper during fishing operations in the early hours of the morning.
Kota Tinggi police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman said the fisherman made the discovery at approximately 3am before immediately handing the remains over to the authorities.
The skull was subsequently sent to the Forensic Unit at Kota Tinggi Hospital for examination and identification.
"An examination conducted by a forensic medical officer confirmed that the skull is believed to belong to an adult male aged between 20 and 30 years,” he said in a statement.
Investigators are now working to establish the identity of the individual and determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
Police have classified the matter as a sudden death report while forensic inquiries continue.
Authorities have also appealed to members of the public who may have missing relatives or possess information relevant to the case to come forward and assist investigators.
