MALAYSIA has reasserted that structured dialogue and unyielding diplomacy must serve as the primary mechanisms for addressing international conflict, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urging ASEAN and Russia to deepen their structural alignment within a rapidly fragmenting global environment.
Presenting Malaysia's national statement at the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit, Anwar observed that contemporary global stability is facing profound stress from escalating geopolitical rivalries, disruptive technological transitions, and macroeconomic insecurity, making collective international cooperation an absolute necessity.
"Malaysia remains firmly committed to the principle that lasting peace can only be achieved through negotiation, deep understanding, and high respect for international law."
The Prime Minister stressed that the modern partnership between ASEAN and Russia must transcend historical diplomatic formalities, pivoting instead toward robust, future-facing sectors capable of yielding measurable economic and societal dividends for both regions.
"Beyond political issues, focus is also given to efforts to boost economic cooperation and modern technology for mutual benefit. Among the strategic sectors given priority are trade, investment, the digital sector, science and technology, artificial intelligence (AI), energy, food security, the halal industry, and strengthening people-to-people relations.
"These sectors are seen as capable of generating greater impact and benefits for all ASEAN member states and the Russian Federation."
Turning to crisis points in the Middle East, Anwar used the multilateral stage to issue a firm demand for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza and the unhindered flow of vital humanitarian relief.
"Malaysia calls for violence in Gaza to be stopped immediately, and insists that humanitarian assistance be delivered without obstruction, while consistently upholding the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to determine their own future and sovereignty."
Anwar further extended his condemnation to the escalation of Israeli military operations into Lebanon, drawing particular attention to the reported strikes affecting United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) personnel, which he characterized as an explicit breach of global legal frameworks and the United Nations Charter.
"Malaysia also strongly condemns the expansion of military actions by the Zionist regime in Israel into Lebanon. The aggressive actions of the regime, which include attacks targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), are strongly condemned as they clearly violate international law and the United Nations Charter."
Anwar added extensive, unmapped opportunities remain open to ASEAN and Russia, provided that future collaboration is structurally anchored in mutual respect, shared equity, and an unwavering commitment to international peace and economic stability. - June 18, 2026
