A 67-YEAR-OLD grandfather has been sentenced to 33 years in prison and 14 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court in Muar today after pleading guilty to five charges of rape and physical sexual assault against his two young granddaughters.

The victimised girls, aged twelve and nine, were subjected to the abuse at a residential property in Batu Pahat.

Judge Mohd Khairi Haron delivered the sentence after being satisfied with the guilty plea entered by the accused, a father of three children who chose to appear in court without legal representation.

According to the prosecution's case, the first and fourth charges detailed that the accused committed physical sexual assault against his 12-year-old granddaughter.

These offences were framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16 of the same legislation. Section 14 carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and caning, while Section 16 provides an additional penalty of up to 5 years in prison and not less than two strokes of the cane.

For the second and third charges, the accused was charged with raping the same 12-old victim at the same residence between January and December of last year. These offences fall under Section 376(2)(d) of the Penal Code, which allows for a prison sentence of up to 30 years and caning for each individual charge.

The fifth charge detailed that the accused committed physical sexual assault against his 9-year-old granddaughter at the same location last year.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Ameerah Allaudeen.

In addition to the custodial sentence and caning, the court ordered the accused to undergo mandatory counselling sessions throughout his period of detention.

The accused will also be placed under police supervision for three years immediately upon his release from prison, in accordance with Sections 26 and 27 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. - June 19, 2026
