BARISAN Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has told Perikatan Nasional (PN) election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to be mindful of his campaign rhetoric, warning that issues touching on race, religion and culture could unsettle Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society.
Zahid said efforts to promote unity among Muslims should not involve remarks that could offend or create unease among other communities.
The Umno president was responding to Sanusi’s recent campaign speeches, including comments on the concept of “Tanah Melayu” that drew attention during the Negeri Sembilan election campaign.
“I want to respond to Datuk Seri Sanusi’s statement. His speech may be suitable for the audience in Kedah. I do not intend to advise him, but he must be mindful,” Zahid told reporters after attending the ‘Salam Agrikomoditi’ programme at Dataran Melang.
Using a metaphor, Zahid said Sanusi should know when to soften his approach.
“Even if there is a tiger in his chest, what is more appropriate to come out of his words is only the goat. I do not want interpretations to arise that eventually cause unease among the various communities,” he said.
Zahid said the idea of Muslim unity could be pursued without bringing up issues involving ethnicity, religion, culture or the identity of other communities.
“I believe in the diversity of Malaysians. There is no need to touch on the sensitivities of other communities. If they want to be friends, then do it in the way friends do,” he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister also suggested that Sanusi should skip campaigning in Negeri Sembilan during the final stretch of the election, leaving the contest to local leaders.
“With six days left until Saturday, it would be better if he does not come to Negeri Sembilan. Let us manage this state in our own way,” he said.
Zahid said political leaders should focus on presenting their plans and solutions to voters instead of making statements that could strain relations between communities.
He added that while political differences were inevitable, they should be handled with maturity and respect. – July 25, 2026
