AN electrical contractor lost RM152,550 after falling victim to a scam involving a syndicate that used the name “Nik Sahril” to offer a fake government project tender.
Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the 68-year-old victim lodged a police report at 2pm yesterday after realising he had been deceived by the individual.
He said the victim received an email on July 14 from a person claiming to be an officer from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) using the name “Nik Sahril” and the email address [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).
According to Azli, the individual offered the victim a project to install solar lights at Kampung Tanjung Baru, Hulu Terengganu.
He said the victim contacted the suspect via WhatsApp after expressing interest in the offer and was instructed to submit his company profile for verification and registration purposes.
“A few days later, the victim was contacted again and offered a project to supply generator sets to KPKT in Putrajaya,” he said in a statement today.
Azli said the suspect then instructed the victim to make two payments into different company accounts for the supply of nine generator units.
He said the victim transferred RM50,850 into one company account on July 22 before making a second payment of RM101,700 into another company account the following day.
“The suspect promised that the victim would receive project payments amounting to RM252,000 within six days.
“However, the victim began to suspect something was amiss after seeking advice from the audit firm that regularly handled his company’s affairs and was informed that the offer was believed to be a scam,” he said.
Azli said the victim later attempted to contact the suspect but failed before lodging a police report.
He added that the money used for the payments belonged to the victim’s company and the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Azli said preliminary investigations indicated that the case was believed to be linked to another scam reported earlier in the same district.
Police had previously reported that a contractor lost more than RM50,000 after being deceived by a fake tender offer from an individual who also claimed to be “Nik Sahril” from KPKT.
“Police do not rule out the possibility that both cases were orchestrated by the same individual or syndicate, and further investigations are ongoing,” he said. - July 27, 2026
