A DRUG suspect wanted over an attack that left two Selama district narcotics officers seriously injured was shot dead after allegedly attacking police with a machete during an arrest operation in Batu Kurau yesterday morning.

Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the suspect was located hiding in a fruit orchard hut at Kampung Klian Gunung Ijok, Batu Kurau, at about 8.20am following information received from members of the public.

"When police arrived at the location, officers saw the suspect beneath the hut.

"Police attempted to approach the suspect, but he immediately stood up and grabbed a machete nearby before attacking and attempting to slash the officers and personnel carrying out the raid.

"To protect themselves from the threat, police fired one shot at the suspect's leg, causing injuries to his right and left thighs," he said during a press conference at the Selama district police headquarters on Monday.

Medical personnel later confirmed that the suspect died at about 9.20am.

Mohd Alwi said the suspect, who worked as a labourer, had 10 previous criminal records, including three related to criminal offences and seven involving drug-related cases.

A post-mortem examination is being conducted at Taiping Hospital.

Previously, media reported that two Selama district police narcotics officers were seriously injured after being attacked with a knife by a man believed to be a drug user at Kampung Sungai Jernih, Ijok, Selama, on June 23 at about 12.10pm.

The suspect fled following the incident, triggering a manhunt by police.

One of the officers, aged 44, suffered slash and stab wounds to his head, abdomen and hands.

Another officer, aged 27, sustained injuries to his forehead, left eye, cheek, hand and elbow.

Both officers received treatment at Taiping Hospital for three days and returned to duty about a week ago. - August 3, 2026
