Anwar moves to cut red tape as govt faces calls to make business easier
The Prime Minister orders a renewed push to dismantle bureaucratic obstacles facing entrepreneurs - August 16, 2026

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered the Government to step up efforts to dismantle bureaucratic red tape that is slowing entrepreneurs and businesses, including complaints over lengthy dealings at land offices and difficulties adapting to new digital systems.

He said the Government was examining ways to simplify e-Invoicing, resolve problems affecting e-commerce and make dealings between businesses and government agencies more efficient.

“We heard several views on how to help advance entrepreneurs. Some complained, for example, about dealings with the land office. Some had to wait for hours.

“Bureaucratic red tape must be improved. Some have complained about AP invoices. I am at the final stage of examining how this can be simplified. Then there are issues arising from e-commerce. We (the Government) will try to resolve them as best as possible,” he said in his winding-up speech at the 2026 PKR National Congress at the Melaka International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITC) today.

Anwar said unnecessary administrative hurdles must be addressed so that entrepreneurs could devote more time and resources to growing their businesses instead of navigating cumbersome government procedures.

He also highlighted concerns surrounding gig workers, particularly demands for stronger welfare provisions and social protection.

He said the Government had agreed to examine an appropriate contribution rate for the group, with the review aimed at ensuring adequate protection while considering the nature of gig employment.

The move reflects the Government’s broader effort to balance stronger social protection with the need to ensure that new obligations remain practical and sustainable for workers and businesses.

Anwar’s intervention comes amid continued efforts by the MADANI Government to improve Malaysia’s ease of doing business by reducing administrative bottlenecks, digitising public services and making regulatory systems more responsive to the needs of businesses.

The review of e-Invoicing is particularly significant as businesses continue adapting to its phased implementation, with concerns over compliance requirements and implementation challenges prompting calls for greater clarity and flexibility.

By tackling these issues alongside problems in e-commerce and government administration, the Government is seeking to reduce friction between entrepreneurs and the public sector while creating conditions more conducive to business expansion, investment and job creation. - August 16, 2026
