MALAYSIA’S position on Taiwan remains unchanged and continues to be firmly aligned with its long-standing One-China policy, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.
Fahmi, who is also Unity Government spokesman, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent remarks on Taiwan were consistent with the official position maintained by Malaysia since the administration of the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.
“Malaysia’s position on the issue dates back to the time of the late Tun Abdul Razak and our position has never changed.
“The Prime Minister merely stated what is consistent with the position of Wisma Putra. So, there is no change or difference on this matter,” he told reporters after attending the MADANI Community Feast programme here today.
Fahmi was responding to criticism from PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, who accused Anwar of placing Malaysia in a difficult diplomatic position and narrowing the country’s diplomatic space through comments made in a recent interview with international broadcaster Al Jazeera.
In the interview, Anwar said he regarded Taiwan as part of China.
“It is one China. It is accepted by all,” he said.
Fahmi also hit back at PAS for what he described as its selective focus on international issues, questioning why the opposition party had remained silent on domestic matters affecting Muslims, particularly the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the management of Lembaga Tabung Haji.
He said the RCI report had exposed weaknesses and inefficiencies in the institution’s management of its accounts and investments between 2014 and 2017, including losses amounting to millions of ringgit.
Fahmi questioned why PAS had been vocal on foreign policy matters but had not taken a similar stance on the findings concerning the management of the pilgrimage fund.
The exchange comes amid renewed political debate over Malaysia’s foreign policy and its position on the increasingly sensitive Taiwan issue, while the government maintains that its diplomatic stance towards China has remained consistent. - August 22, 2026
