PAKATAN Harapan (PH) has stressed that those convicted of corruption or abuse of power, particularly in high-profile cases, must serve the full sentences imposed by the courts.

The coalition’s secretariat said this remained central to PH’s commitment to institutional reform, good governance and the rule of law.

It also reaffirmed its support for the MADANI government’s efforts to tackle leakages and abuse of power, while upholding the Federal Constitution and respecting the country’s institutions.

PH said its position was consistent with an earlier call by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for all cases to be investigated thoroughly, with no compromise against those found guilty.

“PH … maintains that any individual convicted of corruption or abuse of power, particularly in high-profile cases, must serve the full sentence imposed by the court,” it said in a statement.

At the same time, the coalition said ongoing court proceedings must be allowed to conclude independently and without being influenced by considerations outside the judicial process.

“The principle of the rule of law also requires that ongoing judicial processes be given space to be concluded in an orderly and independent manner, without creating any perception that the process has been pre-empted by other considerations,” it said.

PH said Malaysia was still rebuilding public confidence in its institutions and strengthening governance, making the handling of high-profile cases particularly important.

It noted that several major corruption cases in the past had damaged Malaysia’s reputation internationally.

The country had since worked to restore confidence in its institutions and its ability to deal with corruption and abuse of power, it said.

“That momentum must be preserved,” the coalition said.

PH said the coalition’s support came from Malaysians across racial, religious and social backgrounds who had placed their hopes in the Reformasi agenda and the push for a cleaner, more accountable country.

It said that mandate required PH to remain consistent in defending its principles, even when confronted with difficult circumstances and pressure from different quarters. - September 9, 2026
