POLITICAL leaders must put Malaysia’s interests ahead of party differences and avoid emotion-driven politics, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said today amid calls from some Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters for UMNO to leave the Unity Government.
Fahmi, who is also the Unity Government spokesman, said differences of opinion within political parties were normal, but leaders should set an example by putting the national interest first.
“If we look at any political party, there will be voices criticising others, with some wanting to do one thing and others wanting to do something else. But as leaders, we must set an example by putting Malaysia first.
“So, for me, that should be the guiding principle for everyone, not only in leading political parties but also in leading the country,” he said after attending the Oxyenergy X Media Prima Merdeka Run at Balai Berita Media Prima in Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur today.
Fahmi said the Federal Unity Government remained intact and continued to focus on addressing economic challenges and strengthening Malaysia’s position internationally.
On claims that legal action was being used to pressure certain parties, Fahmi said the government remained consistent in not interfering in the affairs of enforcement agencies.
“The Prime Minister and the Administration have been very consistent. We do not interfere in the affairs of enforcement agencies, whether in initiating or stopping any matter or investigation.
“If we look closely, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong himself has decreed that issues involving Tabung Haji and FELDA be investigated thoroughly,” he said.
Asked whether differences among component parties could affect the stability of the administration, Fahmi said he was confident the Unity Government would remain strong until the end of its term. - September 13, 2026
