THE Election Commission will review Malaysia’s electoral boundaries if constitutional amendments are passed to increase parliamentary representation for Sabah and Sarawak in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the commission had taken note of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s proposal to amend the Federal Constitution to allow more parliamentary seats for the two states.
He said any increase in Sabah and Sarawak’s parliamentary seats would also take into account the constituencies in Peninsular Malaysia, with the principle that the ratio of representation for Sabah and Sarawak should be increased from its current level.
“In the context of the delineation of electoral constituencies in the three units of study, the EC will conduct a review of the delineation of electoral constituencies subject to amendments to the Federal Constitution.
“The EC will provide further clarification when there is an official decision and developments that enable the matter to be made public,” he said in a statement today.
Anwar said on Friday that the Federal Constitution would be amended to allow for additional parliamentary seats in Sabah and Sarawak in line with MA63.
He said the increase should ensure that the ratio of representation for Sabah and Sarawak would be higher than it is currently.
