THE Election Commission (EC) will meet on Oct 7 to determine the key dates for the 16th Melaka state election, including polling day.
EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the meeting would be chaired by EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun to review preparations for the state election.
The Melaka State Legislative Assembly was dissolved effective Sept 23 to pave the way for the state election, with the poll required to be held within 60 days of the dissolution.
The dissolution brought an early end to the 15th state assembly, whose term was due to expire on Dec 27.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the dissolution after chairing the final state executive council meeting at the Seri Negeri Auditorium.
The Speaker of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Ibrahim Durum, subsequently submitted the dissolution notice to the EC.
The EC has already opened applications for domestic and overseas postal voting for the Melaka election, with the closing date to be announced later.
In the 2021 Melaka state election, Barisan Nasional won 21 of the 28 seats, while Pakatan Harapan secured five and Perikatan Nasional two. - September 25, 2026
