MALAYSIANS can now apply online for international passports with a 10-year validity period, following the expansion of the Immigration Department's online application service effective today.

The department said the facility now allows applicants to choose between five-year and 10-year Malaysian International Passports, providing greater flexibility according to their travel needs.

"This initiative provides more flexibility and convenience for Malaysians to choose the validity period for their passports based on their respective needs," it said in a recent Facebook post.

Previously, online applications were limited to passports with a five-year validity period.

Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban had earlier said the expansion would be implemented once passport-issuing offices locally and overseas had completed the rollout and the system was confirmed to be stable.

The 10-year passport, introduced on July 1, is available to Malaysians aged 18 and above at RM350, while the five-year option remains priced at RM200.

Between July 1 and Sept 30, the department issued 627,142 passports, comprising 541,994 with five-year validity and 85,148 with 10-year validity.

Zakaria said the average waiting time for a new passport was about one hour after payment, depending on processing efficiency and operating conditions at issuing offices.

He added that while slight delays could occur during peak periods, the situation remained under control.

The department also reminded travellers that the previous version of the Malaysian passport remains valid for travel as long as it has more than six months of validity remaining. - November 2, 2026
