KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has temporarily suspended its official Twitter account after it was compromised.

In a statement, the regulator said the account which carries the @SKMM_MCMC handle was “hacked by an irresponsible party”.

“Following this, the official Twitter account of the commission @SKMM_MCMC involved has been suspended for the time being,” it said in a statement.

“The public is advised not to be influenced by messages that are dubious, profane, and of slanderous nature that were uploaded on the account, and that were NOT issued by MCMC.”

Prior to its deactivation, the account had over 70,000 followers.

While the specific reason for the suspension was not mentioned, Malaysian netizens on Twitter believe that they were related to a string of profanity-laden tirades posted in the account and dating back to 2014.

Some netizens have speculated that the account was previously owned by another individual before it was taken over by the MCMC.

Meanwhile, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil weighed in on the matter, suggesting that it was unlikely that someone had ‘hacked’ the account in the present day for tweets dating back six years ago.

“How could the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s official Twitter (account) be hacked in 2014?” Fahmi asked in a Facebook post.
