KUALA LUMPUR – When his station received a report on shoplifting by a mother of three, Petaling Jaya district police chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal’s interest was piqued, and he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Rather than punishing the woman, he surprised her with basic necessities and a care package from the Welfare Department.
In a video uploaded to Petaling Jaya district police’s Facebook page today, Nik Ezanee said he received a report yesterday on the woman, who was caught by a supermarket security guard after stealing several items, among them a pandan cake and a pack of sausages, as well as a box of fever relief patches for her sick son.
“I felt the need to meet her. I believe she has some problems, otherwise, she wouldn’t have resorted to such action,” he said in the video.
Nik Ezanee and several other officers then visited the woman at her house, where they were greeted by her children.
He said police have classified the case as “no further action”, and advised the woman not to repeat the crime.
After the brief visit, Nik Ezanee urged all Malaysians to abide by the government’s Covid-19 standard operating procedures, and not to complain about the roadblocks set up to ensure compliance with the movement control order (MCO).
“Many are complaining, saying they can’t understand why police have mounted roadblocks and are causing congestion. Remember, you are not the only one facing difficulties, there are many more experiencing worse.
“During this MCO, many are affected, regardless of whether you are a frontliner or a member of the public. So, you have to sacrifice a bit. Let’s help where we can, and please stay at home.” – The Vibes, January 21, 2021
