MIRI – Police here have arrested nine people, including an 18-year-old boy, for fighting in the vicinity of an eatery in the posh Miri Times Square commercial centre last night.

Miri police chief Hakemal Hawari told reporters today that the nine were arrested late last night and placed under remand today for causing a public riot.

The nine are all males aged between 18 to 48, he said.

“There was a fight between the eatery owners and a group of youths following an argument,” he said. “Those involved suffered some injuries.

“Security personnel intervened and the police were alerted,” he said, adding that police have recovered a Japanese sword allegedly used in the incident.

Hakemal said the nine will be charged with public rioting once the probe into the case is completed.

Miri district is under Covid-19 conditional movement control order due to escalating infections.

Miri Hospital has recorded four deaths due to the virus, two of them in the past week.

Drugs seized, two locals arrested

Meanwhile, Miri police also arrested two local men during a raid at a house and seized an assortment of drugs estimated to be worth RM250,000.

Hakemal said that the raid was carried out yesterday in a housing estate on the outskirts of the city.

Acting on information gathered, the police team raided the place to catch the duo in possession of several kilogrammes of drugs that included methamphetamine and ketamine, he told reporters.

The police have placed them under remand starting today and are probing them under Section 39b of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

That charge of drug trafficking carries the death penalty upon conviction. – The Vibes, January 22, 2021
