A KIDNEY patient in Miri, Sarawak was given a new lease of life - thanks to the noble act of a 43-year-old male donor.

Miri Hospital successfully performed its fifth organ donation surgery, which is also the first transplant procedure reported in Sarawak this year.

The donor had pledged his organs through official registration back in 2014.

It was his solemn wish to gift someone in need a second chance at life.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the hospital described the act as a profound gift – “a final gesture of compassion from an individual with a noble heart”.

The transplant surgery was performed by specialists from Sarawak General Hospital, Aaron Goh and Kamal Raj, with the procedure supported by the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC).

The team included Dr Engku Emilia Engku Awang, Mohammad Aliff Abdullah and urology nurses, Siti Zulaikha Mohd Sidek and Liz Estevera Gabin.

Also involved were Dr Uma Devi Ramadass from the Hospital Organ Procurement Unit (UPOH) at Sarawak General Hospital, and members of Miri Hospital’s senior clinical team, who worked closely to ensure the operation proceeded smoothly.

The team also extended their condolences and gratitude to the family of the organ donor.

"This big decision is a sign of deep love and affection, as well as a desire to give hope and new life to others.

"This noble act has a very meaningful impact and can save the lives of those in need.

"Let us all pray that God will give strength and perseverance to his wife and family during this very challenging time," read a post on Miri Hospital's Facebook. – April 18, 2025
