PAPAR – The Sabah government has allocated RM9 million to solve flood problems in Kinarut, here, with flood mitigation works expected to begin in April, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor today.

“The project is expected to be completed within two years. We hope the people of Kinarut will no longer have to face difficulties during the rainy season.”

Flooding in the Papar sub-district has become a common problem for local residents as extended rainfall causes the local Sg Kinarut to overflow.

Irrigation and Drainage Department director Jeffrey Ng Vun Ping said debris and poorly built river crossings have also worsen the flood problems.

Flooding has been an issue for Kinarut folk for the last 10 years.

Under the flood mitigation project, the 3km-long Sg Kinarut will be widened and deepened. Culverts will also be constructed to reinforce its riverbanks.
