LANGKAWI – A yacht about 0.6 nautical miles northeast of Pulau Singa Kechil here caught fire at 8.18am today, with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) rescuing its seven-man crew.

MMEA director for Kedah and Perlis, Admiral Mohd Zawawi Abdullah said the fire was detected by the agency’s ship, KM Tenggol.

“The incident was then channelled to the Langkawi Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) together with the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Marine Police Force, and the Fire and Rescue Department.

“At the same time, the Lightning 6 boat from Maritime Malaysia was mobilised to the scene to provide appropriate assistance,” he said in a statement.

Zawawi said the crew did not suffer any injuries.

“Firefighting work is still in full swing due to strong winds.

“For now, no oil spill has been reported at the scene and we will continue to monitor the situation.” – The Vibes, February 18, 2021
