KUALA LUMPUR – Investigations into the deadly collapse of an overhead bridge along the Sg Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) yesterday have revealed that the driver of the trailer that crashed into a scaffolding there had methamphetamine in his system.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigations and Enforcement Department chief Zulkefly Yahya said a drug test conducted on the driver showed he was positive for the drug commonly known as syabu.

The test was conducted at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

Malay Mail quoted Zulkefly as saying that the driver will be remanded under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which deals with alleged self-administration of a dangerous drug.

Investigations will also continue under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which prohibits driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.

Zulkefly added that investigations also showed the trailer, which was transporting an excavator, crashed into a pedestrian bridge steel frame at the construction site along the MRR2 about 6pm yesterday.

The scaffolding collapsed on top of a car on the road below, which was making its way from Ampang. Two women in their 40s were crushed to death.

Three others in the same vehicle suffered serious injuries, including fractures, lung-swelling and internal bleeding.

It took rescue personnel more than two hours to extricate the trapped victims. – The Vibes, March 4, 2021
