GEORGE TOWN – Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin will only decide to contest for a position in Umno if the Supreme Council holds party polls.
He said the priority is for the council to decide whether to hold or postpone the party’s election this year.
At the same time, he reiterated that the Supreme Council should hold the election this year.
“I want there to be a decision first, after that I will think about whether to contest.
“Now there is no decision from the Supreme Council whether to postpone or hold the election,” he told reporters here today.
Khairy, who is also science, technology and innovation minister, was asked if he will contest for party presidency like he did in June 2018.
In that election, he got 61 votes, with Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi gathering 99 votes while Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah had 30.
The Umno election was supposed to be held last year along with its general assembly but was postponed due to the movement control order.
According to the party constitution, an 18-month long postponement is allowed for polls.
Earlier, Zahid assured that the party election will still be held this year, but did not set a date. – The Vibes, April 1, 2021
