MIRI – Sarawak recorded five out of the 11 Covid-19 deaths nationwide, as well as 570 new infection cases, marking the highest daily death toll caused by the pandemic in the state so far.

In view of the continuous infection spread, the conditional movement control order (CMCO) in Sarawak will be extended until May 10 at least, the state Disaster Management Committee (DMC) secretariat said in a press statement.

“There are 570 new Covid-19 infections today and five deaths, bringing the total death toll to 153.”

It also announced that four of the deaths were in Bintulu Hospital, while the remaining one was in Sarikei Hospital.

“The patients who passed away at Bintulu Hospital were two men aged 54 and 60, and two women aged 54 and 71,” the secretariat said, adding that a 61-year old man also died in Sarikei Hospital.

The secretariat extended its condolences to the families of the deceased.

Bintulu district recorded the most new cases (128), followed by Kapit (109), Sibu (54, Kuching (76), Subis (29), Serian (26), Song (45), Mambong (16), Tatau (14), Miri (11), and several other districts (below 10 each).

The DMC secretariat reported that the total number of active clusters in Sarawak now stands at 56, and that out of the state’s 40 districts, 21 are listed as red zones where infections are raging.

It once again stressed on the need for the general public to obey all standard operating procedures in order to break the infection spread.

Nine settlements have been placed under an enhanced MCO to curb rising infections, the secretariat added. – The Vibes, April 24, 2021
