GEORGE TOWN – A popular nasi kandar restaurant in Bukit Jambul on Penang island has been closed after at least five of its workers were found to have contracted Covid-19.
Sources close to the state Health Department told The Vibes that not more than the affected staff were found to be Covid-positive following an initial screening conducted by the management of the restaurant.
"Following that, more than 30 employees of the nasi kandar restaurant conducted a screening test this morning,” a source said.
"So far, there are no reports that it involves customers, but we will continue to monitor (the situation) from time to time.”
The notice of closure of the restaurant was made in accordance with Subsection 18 (1)(f) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.
It is understood that, while the temporary closure is subject to the discretion of the state Health Department, it usually lasts for 10 days.
Meanwhile, a survey at the restaurant found “Work in Progress” notices pasted in several spots of the premises. It is understood that they refer to sanitation work being conducted.
Yesterday, Penang recorded 158 new Covid-19 cases, with the highest being 43 cases in the Northeast district.
A total of 19,556 people have been infected and 25 have lost their lives in the state since the outbreak of the pandemic early last year. – The Vibes, April 30, 2021
