KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded 3,418 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the total caseload to 415,012, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Ten of today’s new cases were imported, while those under intensive care reached an all-time high of 345, and 175 were intubated.

The statistic reflects the increasing strain on both public and private hospitals in dealing with the Covid-19 crisis, as reports abound of medical centres reaching their optimum capacity in caring for patients affected by the virus.

The country also registered 12 fatalities, bringing the death toll to 1,533.

New recoveries stand at 2,698, pushing the total discharged to 383,140.

Selangor logged the highest number of cases today at 1,200, followed by Sarawak (587), Kelantan (400), Johor (213), Kuala Lumpur (198), Terengganu (184), Penang (145), Sabah (115) and Kedah (101).

Perak logged 77 cases, Negri Sembilan (73), Melaka (61), Pahang (45) Putrajaya (8), Labuan (7), and Perlis (4).

Dr Noor Hisham said six of the 3,418 new Covid-19 cases today are related to detention centres, all linked to the Pagar Sri Lalang cluster.

Kelantan registered three of the 12 deaths today, while Negri Sembilan, Johor and Sarawak had two each, and Perak, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur had one each. All fatalities involved locals.

The country has detected a total of 1,680 clusters since the pandemic began last year, including 11 new ones today.

A total of 1,284 clusters have ended, including 10 today – the Lorong Mulia cluster, Jalan Alamanda cluster, Jalan Padang cluster, Taman Brick cluster, Jalan Kemajuan cluster, Jalan Suasana cluster, Wakaf Chagak cluster, Jalan Teluk Kumbar cluster, Kg Batu Lapan Lekir cluster and Sg Mupong cluster. – The Vibes, May 2, 2021
