MIRI – Some 20 people from six families today escaped a fiery death in Sibu town during a pre-dawn fire that destroyed six houses on Jalan Tiong Hua in the town centre.
The 5am fire saw all the six houses razed to the ground, said Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department today.
“The six houses are adjacent to each other. All the occupants managed to escape the fire,” the department said in its updates.
Firefighters managed to put out the fire within 40 minutes and prevented it from spreading to the other houses in the vicinity.
The victims are being sheltered at temporary accommodations pending welfare assistance.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Yesterday, there was another fire where 17 people from four families managed to escape the blaze that razed their homes in Kg Masjid in the remote Balingian sub-district.
The 9.15am incident saw the fire spreading rapidly from one house to the next, but all four families escaped without serious injuries. The village is 60km away from Mukah town. – The Vibes, May 13, 2021
