GEORGE TOWN – Former Penang Umno Youth head Datuk Seri Mohamed Ismail Mohamed Othman, who was also a long-serving councillor at the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), succumbed to Covid-19 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Othman, who was an influential figure in the Jelutong Umno division and a former political secretary to Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz, contracted the virus while in the capital and died despite valiant attempts by doctors to save him at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Known as “Ali Gemuk”, Othman was among some key local party players when Umno was dominant in Penang. This was especially so during the period Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was chairman of the state Umno and national deputy president in the 1990s before he was sacked from the party.

Othman was also the father-in-law of popular artist Marsha Milan Londoh, who posted a confirmation of his death on social media.

She sought for prayers to be recited for her beloved father-in-law.

A former contractor, Othman was also an active supporter of the local entertainment scene.

Yesterday, Umno’s permanent deputy chairman Datuk Seri Rizuan Abdul Hamid also died of the virus at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. – The Vibes, May 23, 2021
