KUALA LUMPUR – PKR will set a new date for its 15th national congress, which was supposed to be held today, said secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Although the postponement exceeds the 18-month grace period granted by the Registrar of Societies (RoS), he said, the party is left with no choice but to comply with the latest instruction by the body and National Security Council (NSC).

In an address on PKR’s Facebook page today, he said NSC has warned that the party will be in breach of movement control order (MCO) standard operating procedures should it carry on with its congress today.

“The party’s leadership council will set a new date (for the congress). As secretary-general, I will then inform RoS of the date, and I will also write to NSC to seek guidance.

“In the current situation, the postponement exceeds 18 months, but we are not considered to have violated any act or the party constitution, because the order came from NSC and RoS.”

A letter from NSC states that the congress can be postponed until June 30, he said.

“(The letter) stated that it will also depend on whether the MCO is extended.

“On our end, our preparations are up to 100%. We have prepared annual statements, finances, notices.”

The three-day congress was yesterday suspended by NSC, after PKR had already completed its Women and Youth wing meets on Friday and yesterday.

The last day of the congress, which was supposed to be today, had been set to feature a policy speech by president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as well as debates by delegates and speeches by several key party leaders.

Some 2,400 party delegates and leaders nationwide had been expected to participate via Zoom. – The Vibes, June 6, 2021
