KUALA LUMPUR – Former Perak menteri besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir is the new Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general.
The unanimous decision was agreed upon by the supreme council during a meeting, which saw the attendance of BN component parties – Umno, MCA, MIC and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah.
On his appointment, Zambry told The Vibes that it is an arduous task and comes with great responsibility.
“We need to move with trust, a good team and good advice, and lend an ear to the voices of the people.
“The BN leadership now prioritises the people’s grave concern in tackling Covid-19 and improving the economy.”
Datuk Seri Azlan Man was also made Perlis BN liaison committee chairman during the meet.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the supreme council also decided to strengthen party machinery in the states to assist in Covid-19 vaccination registration, especially among the elderly, disabled and rural residents.
“The supreme council calls on all parties to comply with standard operating procedures to curb the transmission of Covid-19, which is very worrying at this time,” he said in a statement tonight.

Zahid said the annual general meeting was held online and fulfilled Societies Act 1966 requirements.
The meet also saw the presentation of the annual report for the year ending December 31, 2020.
The BN secretary-general position was previously held by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
Ahmad, following the statement tonight, tweeted that he had withdrawn from the BN post since February and it was agreed by Zahid.
“As Umno and Muafakat Nasional secs-gen, I already have many responsibilities. I would like to congratulate Zambry on his appointment today.”
Controversy arose when Tan Sri Annuar Musa was sacked as BN and Muafakat Nasional secretaries-general on January 5.
Annuar confirmed the sacking in a tweet, also sharing a screenshot of his WhatsApp conversation with Zahid.
His tweet also said he was informed of the decision by the media.
Previously, some Umno leaders and warlords had told Annuar to leave Umno and join Bersatu after he remained adamant in defending the Perikatan Nasional government. – The Vibes, June 8, 2021
