MIRI – A 23-year-old man was killed after a home-made bomb exploded yesterday evening while he was on his way to a jungle for a hunting trip from his longhouse in Sg Bidi, Meradong.

Lawrence Luyang, 23, died when the device he was carrying exploded on the motorcycle he was on. The pillion rider with him suffered serious injuries.

Meradong police chief Sekam Anoi said today that police were alerted to the incident by longhouse residents after they had heard a loud explosion.

“The motorcyclist was apparently carrying the device on his motorcycle from a longhouse to go hunting in the jungle. The home-made device exploded and killed him on the spot.

“The pillion rider had serious injuries and was rushed to Sarikei Hospital.

“We are investigating how such a bomb could have been made,” he said in a statement, adding that it is an offence to make explosive devices.

The illicit act is punishable under Section 5 of the Explosives Act 1957. – The Vibes, June 10, 2021
