GEORGE TOWN – A grass-cutter suspected to be high on drugs has been detained after he ran over and killed a 61-year-old during a high-speed chase near the Universiti Sains Malaysia campus here this morning.

The 46-year-old suspect was arrested after police chased him down to a narrow stretch near a row of condominiums opposite the campus in Batu Uban about 9am.

Officers fired several rounds at the tyres of the suspect’s vehicle, a Perodua, resulting in him ramming into cars parked by the roadside.

Scores of cops then surrounded the vehicle and dragged him out.

Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong confirmed the incident, adding that the victim, a retiree from East Jelutong, died on the spot.

It is believed that the grandfather was heading to the wet market in Jalan Perak when he was mowed down by the speeding suspect.

Earlier, the suspect was spotted behaving suspiciously by police on patrol at the Jalan P. Ramlee-Jalan Perak intersection. He then sped off, leading to a high-speed chase through George Town.

Officers found three packets of drugs, believed to be heroin, on him.

His vehicle is believed to have been rented. – The Vibes, June 15, 2021
