MIRI – A senior citizen living in an old folks’ home in Kuching has died of Covid-19 under the new Iris Garden Cluster, said the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (DMC) secretariat.

The state also saw two more Covid-19 fatalities, involving a 73-year-old man at the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching and a 56-year-old man woman at Sibu Hospital.

“These fatalities bring the state death toll to 366,” said the secretariat in a press statement.

The DMC added that the late senior citizen was part of one of six new clusters declared today.

“The Iris Garden Cluster involved residents of an old folks’ home, where eight were found infected and one of them succumbed to Covid-19.”

The other five outbreak clusters are the Jalan Stampin Cluster in Kuching (18 residents infected in an old folks’ home), the Jalan Keruing Cluster in a business centre in Kuching (11 traders positive), the Kg Serikin Cluster in Bau (19 villagers positive due to social gathering), the Sawai Cluster in Niah (32 factory workers infected), and the Jalan Kidurong 4 Cluster in Bintulu (18 folks in a resettlement scheme found positive).

The DMC said that screening is being done in these new outbreak zones now, which saw a total of 559 new infections today.

Bintulu recorded 79 new cases, followed by Kuching (61), Miri (51), Tatau (48), Subis (43), Kapit (29), Matu (27), and other districts (below 20 new cases each).

The DMC said Sarawak is extending its screenings due to the continuous high rate of infections and deaths.

It has once again appealed for public adherence to all standard operating procedures to help stop the spread of infections. – The Vibes, June 17, 2021
