GEORGE TOWN – There have been cases of employers hiding their main group of workers from authorities when one or two of them tested positive for Covid-19.

The majority of these worksites are linked to small and medium enterprise factories, which operate in industrial zones in the state.

Penang Medical Practitioners’ Society president Dr Parmjit Singh told The Vibes that he has been recently informed of such claims.

He urged employers to fully cooperate with the authorities, as Penang braces itself for the extension of the full movement control order for an unspecified period of time.

The accusations complicate the efforts to effectively fight the pandemic, he added.

He claimed that there are employers, in the event of a Covid-19 case, who will disperse their workers instead of sending them to get swab tests.

“The workers, some who are foreigners, go into hiding for a while.”

Parmjit said employers need to cooperate when it comes to mass testing, isolating confirmed Covid-19 cases and encouraging vaccine registration.

“The only way forward is to ensure there is total compliance of standard operating procedures. We cannot afford to be lax.”
