KOTA KINABALU – Sabah has agreed, in principle, to the setting up of a trade and tourism office in Singapore to promote bilateral economic potential.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor said this during a virtual call, the first between the two, with Singaporean High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon this morning.
Hajiji said Sabah and Singapore has a long history of trade relations, and the setting up of the office will augur well for enhanced bilateral relations.
“I would also like to invite Singaporean investors to look at opportunities under our Sabah Maju Jaya development plan focusing on high impact investments, particularly in the agriculture and tourism sectors.”
He said both sides spoke on various issues, among them the containment of the pandemic and measures to keep numbers down.
Singapore is among Sabah’s top 10 trading partners with a trade value of RM133 million as of January. Among the 10 product categories exported to the island republic include palm oil, seafood, crude petroleum and wood products.
Sabah has recorded more than RM7 billion in trade revenue with Singapore in 2019-2020, according to the International Trade and Industry Ministry. – The Vibes, June 28, 2021
