ALOR STAR – Police are investigating a report against a Kedah MP who supposedly breached current movement control order standard operating procedures.

Kota Setar police chief Ahmad Shukri Mat Akhir said a report was lodged over the matter at the district police station at 11.36pm yesterday, and initial investigation found that several photos of the incident have gone viral.

Shukri said a person using the account handle “Nurul Amin Hamid” uploaded the images on social media platforms. It is understood that Nurul Amin is the Kedah PAS Youth chief.

The photos show Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar sitting cross-legged in front of food and the presence of others, while his mask was brought down to his chin.

Mahfuz was said to be involved in an aid programme when the photos were taken.

The Amanah vice-president, when contacted, said he is aware of the ongoing investigation.

“I respect the decision by police to investigate and I am ready to cooperate.

“This incident took place at Kg Alor Gandak near here last Friday, when I attended a meet-and-greet session and distributed aid to villagers,” Mahfuz told The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister portal Getaran today.

“I hope police can speed up the investigation, and if they need to compound me, do so immediately. Treat me like one of the people.”

He also denied claims that he was sitting on a table while being served food at the function.

“That wasn’t a dining table, but a ‘pangkin’ that the villagers use as a seat.”

He does not intend to drag out the case, he added, and cause misunderstanding among the people that police have double standards when it comes to treatment of VIPs.

Shukri said the case is being investigated under Regulation 11(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) (No.4) Regulations 2021 for the alleged offence of gathering in public places, and Regulation 17(1) of the same measure for not wearing a face mask or practising social distancing.

He added that anyone with information on the matter can contact senior investigating officer Muhammad Ilhan Icha Luther at 019-288-3428. – The Vibes, July 4, 2021
