BUTTERWORTH – The 20 families from Sabah and Sarawak here in need of food have been given a helping hand by the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB) and Penang Hindu Association (PHA).
PHEB executive director Datuk M. Ramachandran and PHA president P. Murugiah made arrangements to provide meals and groceries to the affected families today.
The Vibes yesterday reported that 20 families from Sabah and Sarawak who live in the peninsula have opted to not fly the white flag despite having lost their jobs due to factory closures.
Murugiah said PHA will be providing meals daily to the affected families until the end of MCO.
He said his volunteers provided lunch to about 50 people from Taman Bagan and in Bukit Tengah areas.
“We will also provide foodstuffs to the affected families throughout this month as our volunteers will be visiting them to check their needs.”
The families’ spokesman, who wished to be known only as Thomas, said most of them have been finding it hard to put food on the table since last year, following financial woes.
The families live around Simpang Ampat, Seberang Prai Tengah and Taman Bagan here.
Thomas said the affected families have sole breadwinners who were daily wage earners or contract workers, before losing their jobs due to the ongoing movement control order.
