KUANTAN – Local authorities have removed protest banners highlighting Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) alleged failure in handling the Covid-19 crisis after they went viral on social media.

According to The Vibes’ sister publication Getaran, local council enforcement also removed similar banners hung up on pedestrian bridges in Kemaman, Terengganu.

“The people live in suffering, the stupid government lives for power,” one of the protest banners read.

Twitter user @HermyRahim, who posted the pictures of the banners, said other protest signs were tied to bridges along the main roads of Jalan Beserah, Jalan Air Putih, and the Jalan Pintasan Kuantan-Pelabuhan near Balok.

As of press time, his tweet had over 15,000 retweets and 14,000 likes since it was posted today.

A similar incident was reported in Kelantan in May, along with several other areas in Melaka, and Parit Raja in Johor.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said that his department had not received any reports on the banners when they were discovered on May 22.

However, he said the department will continue to monitor the matter.

The protest banners are believed to be due to public anger and dissatisfaction over the government’s current handling of the pandemic.

Despite the emergency’s declaration in January, daily infections have reached an all-time high of more than 13,000 Covid-19 cases as of today. – The Vibes, July 15, 2021
