KUALA LUMPUR – Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh and Kg Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei are at the courthouse in Jalan Duta this morning to show support for activist Heidy Quah, who will be charged today.
Yeoh said the move against Quah shows that the government is silencing youth who speak up.
“The government should spend time doing something more effective and productive.
“I can safely say that without Quah and her friends looking out for minorities, the situation on the ground could be far worse,” she told the press outside the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
Yeoh said she and her colleagues have been providing food aid to the needy since the start of the movement control order last year, but the activist has been doing similar work for years.
Instead of cracking down on non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the DAP lawmaker urged the government to instead keep an open mind, receive constructive criticism and work with NGOs to provide welfare for those in need.
Lim, meanwhile, said the move to charge Quah is not right as she was merely aiding the neglected.
“This sends the wrong message to youth, who may want to do the right thing and serve the neglected.”
Quah is expected to be charged at the cybercrime court here under Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 over her Facebook post last year that highlights the plight of detainees at immigration depots in the country. – The Vibes, July 27, 2021
