MIRI – Residents of Sibu town had a fright today when a petrol station together with an oil tanker went up in flames, releasing gigantic plumes of black smoke that could be seen from miles away.

Its location – near the Sacred Heart School – could be seen to have thick, billowing smoke based on photographs posted by netizens.

The Sibu Fire and Rescue Department had deployed teams of firefighters to the site, with the police also on location to coordinate traffic control.

The cause of the fire is still unclear and no explosions have been reported so far.

The surrounding areas – which include shops, office blocks, and banks – have been cordoned off.

It was reported that the fire began around 10.30am at the fuel-loading area after an oil-tanker and not the main building caught fire.

The fire has since been contained. – The Vibes, July 27, 2021
