GEORGE TOWN – Although many Penang folk are pleased with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as prime minister this afternoon, they are still anxious about what is to come.
The most talked-about candidates – opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Umno veteran Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob – are not looked upon with favour and are said to be unable to bring about much-needed change in the country.
“I think he (Muhyiddin) really messed it up, from the mishandling of the Covid-19 situation. It became very obvious that he does not care about the B40 families, and the way he allowed his cabinet to behave terribly shows that he did a bad job,” said Benice Malini, a university lecturer.
“I would like Hannah Yeoh and maybe Nurul Izzah Anwar, those are my two trusted politicians.
“But my choice will definitely not be any of the current politicians running or rushing to be prime minister. I say this because we have gone through a hard time being traumatised by these clowns. We were played for a fool by Dr Mahathir, and then Muhyiddin.
“If there is any lesson here, it is that we should not rely on them to save us.”
Musician turned coconut trader Prem Raj told The Vibes that the immediate past administration did not serve full-time musicians like him, who have been out of a job for almost two years.
“It has come to the point where I have to come to the roadside and start selling fresh coconuts and burgers.
“I really hope the next person that comes in can bring hope to the current situation, and bring us back to what things used to be.”
His choice for prime minister is Anwar, as he believes that his term as finance minister from 1991 to 1998 was a good run.
Graduate student Sarah Yeoh told The Vibes that it is time for the younger generation to lead Malaysia as times have changed and the older generation is not in touch with the needs of the people today.
“We need people who walk the talk like Yeoh or Nurul, but they are being sidelined, maybe because they are too young. I think Syed Saddiq (Syed Abdul Rahman) is also definitely one to look out for to be PM in the future too.
“He could crowdfund to feed the people in Muar, and I think we need new blood to bring real change to the generation of Malaysians today.”
