KUALA LUMPUR – As Malaysians await the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s announcement on the country’s next prime minister, Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) said it will not proceed with the #Lawan protest planned for August 21.

In a statement today, the movement stressed that this does not signal the end of its fight.

“In every struggle for truth, bitterness and obstacles are part of the journey.

“The fight for rights must continue especially when the rakyat are trodden upon by the ones in power.”

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as prime minister is a win for the people after he failed to save 13,000 lives lost to Covid-19, it said.

On July 31, SSR organised the #Lawan rally to demonstrate the public’s frustration at seeing the country crumble under Perikatan Nasional’s watch amid the pandemic.

Calling for increased compliance with democratic practices, the movement urged political leaders to return to the legislative arena to discuss policies and heal the nation.

“The new prime minister must have focus, ideas, and the will and courage to ensure Malaysians are cared for, after they were neglected by a government preoccupied with politicking.

“We also demand that the next prime minister be appointed based on constitutional principles.

“His legitimacy must be proven by a confidence vote in Parliament, and not statutory declarations that lack transparency.

“The democratic process of providing checks and balances to the government must continue.

“We won’t hesitate to pursue action if the new government fails to curb the pandemic and political woes.” – The Vibes, August 19, 2021
