GEORGE TOWN – Flash floods struck the Bayan Baru satellite township here today, affecting general traffic flow as waters rose.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department had warned of more rainfall in the coming days and urged fishermen to take precautions when heading out to sea due to the southwest monsoon season.

This is the second time Penang is experiencing flash floods in less than a week.

Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz urged villagers in low-lying areas to move household items to higher ground while they wait out the possible overflow of riverbanks here.

Residents here have also expressed their concern that the rough weather may disrupt the daily vaccination drive under the National Covid-19 Immunisation Plan.

It is learnt that some 80% of those registered under the MySejahtera app will reportedly get their first dose by this week, while over 50% of them will be fully vaccinated by the same period.

Meanwhile, state exco member Phee Boon Poh urged residents to assist the local authorities by alerting the Penang island and Seberang Prai city councils of drainages clogged by heaps of rubbish.

He also urged the people to maintain cleanliness in view that the northern region will be entering a patch of rough weather involving monsoon rains and rough seas. – The Vibes, August 24, 2021
