MIRI – A cockfight near Bintulu town ended in tragedy when a man bled to death after a rooster turned aggressive while he tried to attach spurs on the animal.
A longhouse chief, a plantation owner and four other men have been arrested at the cock-fighting arena in the Bintulu-Miri Highway.
Bintulu district police chief Zulkifli Suhaili said the incident happened last Sunday evening.
“Initial investigations showed that the man took part in a cock-fight illegally organised by a group that allegedly included a longhouse chief and an owner of a plantation estate.
“The man was attaching spurs on the legs of the rooster when it turned aggressive. The spurs inadvertently slashed the man’s thigh.
“He was rushed to the Bintulu Hospital but died after a massive bleeding,” he told reporters in Bintulu town.
Zulkifli said the suspects were arrested yesterday and placed under remand to facilitate investigations.
“They are being investigated for cruelty towards animals and also for violating Covid-19 standard operating procedures and going against the directive not to gather in groups for social gatherings.” – The Vibes, August 31, 2021
